On December 6, 2024, Indian police used tear gas and pepper spray to stop around 100 Punjabi farmers marching toward Delhi. The farmers were demanding higher crop prices and additional support. The confrontation occurred approximately 200 km north of the capital.
The farmers, who have been camped at the Punjab-Haryana border since February, broke through initial police barricades but faced strong resistance further ahead. The Haryana government suspended mobile internet and bulk messaging services to curb misinformation.
In the past, farmer protests led to the repeal of certain agricultural laws in 2021, but the government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has not commented on the current agitation. The opposition Congress party has fully supported the farmers’ demands.
In recent years, farmers in Punjab and Haryana have frequently blocked highways and railway tracks to press for their demands. These protests have caused significant disruptions in transportation and daily life in the region.

पहले भी किसानों के विरोध के चलते 2021 में कृषि कानूनों को रद्द किया गया था, लेकिन प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी की सरकार ने इस ताजा प्रदर्शन पर कोई टिप्पणी नहीं की है। विपक्षी कांग्रेस पार्टी ने किसानों की मांगों का पूरा समर्थन किया है।
हाल के वर्षों में पंजाब और हरियाणा के किसान अक्सर राजमार्गों और रेलवे ट्रैकों को जाम कर अपनी मांगें रखते आए हैं। इस तरह के विरोधों से क्षेत्र में परिवहन और सामान्य जीवन बुरी तरह प्रभावित हुआ है।
