OYO, a prominent hotel booking platform, has updated its check-in policy in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. Now, couples must present valid proof of their relationship at check-in, even for online reservations. This change grants partner hotels the discretion to decline bookings from unmarried couples, aligning with local societal norms.
This policy shift responds to feedback from civil society groups and residents in Meerut, who urged OYO to address concerns about unmarried couples booking rooms. Pawas Sharma, OYO’s Region Head for North India, emphasized the company’s commitment to safe and responsible hospitality, balancing individual freedoms with community sensibilities.
Initially implemented in Meerut, OYO may extend this policy to other cities based on local feedback. The company aims to enhance its reputation as a family-friendly brand, ensuring safe experiences for all travelers, including families, students, business professionals, and solo travelers. OYO has also initiated seminars on safe hospitality with police and hotel partners, blacklisted hotels promoting immoral activities, and taken action against unauthorized hotels using its branding.
It’s important to note that while OYO’s new policy allows partner hotels to refuse bookings to unmarried couples, there is no blanket ban across all OYO properties. Unmarried couples can still book rooms in many OYO hotels, depending on individual hotel policies and local norms
