On December 18, 2024, a tragic accident occurred off Mumbai’s coast when an Indian Navy speedboat, undergoing engine trials, lost control and collided with the passenger ferry “Neelkamal,” which was en route to Elephanta Island with over 100 passengers.
First responders described the scene as chaotic, with passengers screaming and crying for help. Arif Bamane, a driver of the Mumbai Port Trust pilot boat “Poorva,” recalled rescuing a small girl who was motionless due to water in her lungs; after performing chest compressions, her breathing normalized.
Another rescuer, Iqbal Gothekar, who has been a boat driver since 2004, mentioned that he had never witnessed such an incident in his career. He and his team managed to rescue 16 individuals, bringing them safely to the Gateway of India.
The collision resulted in the ferry capsizing, leading to the tragic loss of 13 lives, including one Navy personnel and two others on the Navy craft. However, 99 passengers were successfully rescued by Navy and civilian boats.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences and announced an ex-gratia payment of ₹2 lakh for the next of kin of each deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured.
The incident has prompted authorities to initiate a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the collision and address any lapses in safety protocols.
