A tragic case from Pune has highlighted the extreme pressures young professionals can face in today’s work environment. Anna Sebastian Perayil, a 26-year-old Chartered Accountant, joined Ernst & Young (EY) in March 2024. Sadly, within just four months, she passed away due to what her mother described as overwhelming work stress.
Anna’s mother, Anita Augustine, shared a heartfelt letter accusing EY of fostering a toxic work culture that glorifies overwork. She mentioned that Anna faced immense pressure, long hours, anxiety, and sleeplessness. Despite these challenges, Anna was determined to succeed and pushed herself beyond her limits. However, this proved too much for her health, leading to her untimely death.
What adds to the heartbreak is that no one from EY attended Anna’s funeral, a detail her mother highlighted to emphasize the lack of empathy from the firm. This case has sparked widespread debate online, with many calling for reforms in how companies manage workloads and employee well-being
