A rare polar bear was tragically shot in Iceland after it drifted on an iceberg from Greenland. The bear, the first seen in Iceland since 2016, was discovered near a summer house in the remote Westfjords region. An elderly woman locked herself in her home as the bear rummaged through her garbage. Due to the bear’s proximity to humans and its potential danger, Icelandic police made the decision to shoot it after consulting the Environment Agency.
Polar bears are not native to Iceland but occasionally arrive on drifting ice floes. These encounters are rare, with only about 600 sightings since the 9th century. Although polar bears are a protected species in Iceland, lethal force is permitted if they pose a threat to people or livestock. Scientists from the Icelandic Institute of Natural History plan to study the bear’s health and preserve parts of its remains for research. This incident highlights the increasing challenges posed by climate change, as melting sea ice forces polar bears closer to human settlements
