Jeju Air’s stock plummeted to a record low following a catastrophic crash that claimed 179 lives. The Boeing 737-800, en route from Bangkok to Muan International Airport in South Korea, failed to deploy its landing gear properly, skidded off the runway, and burst into flames upon colliding with a concrete barrier. Only two crew members survived the disaster.
In response, Jeju Air’s shares dropped 8.5% to 6,920 won, erasing approximately 95.7 billion won in market value. The parent company, AK Holdings, also saw a 12% decline. This incident marks Jeju Air’s first fatal accident since its inception in 2005.
South Korea’s acting president has ordered a comprehensive safety inspection of the nation’s aviation operations. Preliminary investigations suggest a bird strike and adverse weather conditions may have contributed to the crash. Both black boxes have been recovered, and a thorough investigation is underway.
Analysts predict a short-term impact on consumer perception and potential travel cancellations. Travel agencies have also reported a decline in bookings and stock prices.
Jeju Air’s CEO has expressed deep condolences and pledged full cooperation with the investigation to determine the exact cause of the tragedy.
