The Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council has postponed its decision to reduce taxes on insurance premiums, awaiting feedback from the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI). Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced that the council will revisit the matter after receiving IRDAI’s input.
Currently, an 18% GST is levied on premiums for life and health insurance policies. The proposed tax cut aims to lower insurance costs for policyholders. However, the council has deferred the decision until it receives the necessary feedback from the IRDAI.
In a previous statement, Finance Minister Sitharaman indicated that reducing GST rates on health and life insurance could make insurance more affordable for policyholders. She emphasized that competitive pricing would help ensure that the benefits of any tax reduction are passed on to consumers.
The GST Council, chaired by Sitharaman and comprising state counterparts, is expected to discuss the issue further once the IRDAI’s feedback is received. This development is being closely watched by the insurance industry and policyholders alike.
