After Diwali festivities, Delhi’s air quality index (AQI) soared past 300, falling into the “very poor” category, largely due to fireworks combined with seasonal stubble burning in nearby states. This has left the city engulfed in smog, with residents facing increasing respiratory issues. Hospitals report a spike in respiratory conditions among children and elderly citizens, who are particularly vulnerable to high pollution levels. This seasonal pattern of poor air quality has reignited debates on pollution control, as experts emphasize reducing emissions at the source rather than relying on temporary solutions like smog towers.
To combat worsening conditions, the Delhi government has imposed a ban on firecrackers until January 2025 and implemented measures under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), which restricts activities that contribute to pollution. However, experts argue that a long-term strategy involving both local and regional efforts is essential to effectively tackle the recurring smog crisis. For now, residents rely on air purifiers and masks as authorities push for stricter controls on pollution sources.
