Actor-director Sachin Pilgaonkar recently shared fascinating insights from the set of Sholay, recalling his time as an assistant director. He revealed that Ramesh Sippy, the director of the iconic film, only handled scenes involving lead actors like Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, and Sanjeev Kumar. For other parts, including action scenes like the train robbery sequence, a second unit, led by action director Mohammed Ali and stuntmen from Hollywood, took over.
Sachin humorously mentioned that both he and Amjad Khan (who played Gabbar Singh) were tasked with overseeing the second unit because they were the “bekaar” (useless) ones on set at the time. Ramesh Sippy entrusted them with this responsibility, giving them the opportunity to represent him during non-lead scenes.
The memories shared by Sachin continue to add to the legendary status of Sholay, showcasing the collaborative efforts behind such a cinematic masterpiece.
